There is a trick to shopping abroad. Don’t come home with a suitcase-full of costume-like apparel that you’ll never wear again. When you get swept up in the romance of the country and see how beautifully the locals wear their threads, it’s more than easy to think you can pull off the same looks off at home. You can’t. I speak from personal experience. On my first trip to India, some six years ago, I purchased enough tops and wraps to outfit the entire crew of SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE. And, with the exception of a few pashminas, I didn’t wear any of it until my next trip to India, six years later. So I gave myself a rule for that next holiday. I had to ask myself if I would really wear the item in LA or was I just under the spell of the country. As a binge shopper, posing this one little question pre-purchase was surprisingly effective. Though I still returned home with a heap of wares, they were all useful and, while exotic, still LA appropriate. Live and learn, my friends.
