If you haven’t quite gathered by now, I am a nerd. And I mean that in the best sense of the word. I spent most of my holiday in New York last week in either a museum or theater. I get unreasonably excited over grammar. And I can often be found with my nose buried between the pages of a book (or iPad, as it is). My dog is named after the protagonist of Great Expectations, for crying out loud. But, I digress. As I love the arts of all mediums, print, performing and otherwise, I find inspiration every time I open a book or set foot in a gallery. This influences not only my own work, but also my sense of style. And who better a muse than Nabokov’s little darling? I had an admittedly unusual obsession with Lolita from an all too early age. Although I am now too old to be considered a Lolita-type myself, I am still inspired by her precocious attitude and dress. For me, she represented the crossroads between girl and woman. Though I’ve (more or less) crossed that pivotal threshold, this dress takes me back to that transitional time. And the nerd in me thinks that, every now and then, that isn’t such a bad thing.
