Where To Break A Sweat

Last Training Tuesday, I sang the praises of my latest workout addiction, ClassPass.  The great thing about ClassPass is that you have over 150 fitness studios at your fingertips.  Which means that you will have nearly unlimited opportunities to experience different workouts, both awesome and not so much.  My mother always said that if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.  Although I admittedly don’t always put this motto into practice, today I shall.  Here are the three truly kick ass studios I’ve begun to frequent.  All offer strong, sweaty workouts by knowledgable instructors.  And, best of all, they’re all a blast.  Happy sweating!

I was a classically trained ballerina from nearly the time I could walk until I went away to college.  So, to say I’m a dance snob is the understatement of the century.  While barre workouts are all the rage, it is the general consensus among dancers, both current and past, that “THEY ARE NOT BALLET.”  Which is why I was thrilled to stumble (gracefully, of course) into Ballet Bodies.  They offer truly wonderful ballet-based classes for all levels.  Whether you grew up dancing or have no idea why pointe is spelled with an “e,” I can promise that you will immediately fall in love with this place.  The movements are classical, but the music is fun and current.  The instructors are beautiful, motivating and knowledgable.  And they offer a wide array of classes, all with a balletic theme.  You may find yourself doing plies at the barre on day and changements on a trampoline the next.  Did I mention how fun this place is?  Try to visit on Tutu Tuesday.  Tutus are provided to all ballerinas.

In my first class, the instructor asked me if I’d ever boxed before.  I looked down at my pink gloves and replied that I didn’t think I have ever even hit anything before.  Inside some of the most intense workouts I’ve ever experienced, not only do you punch, you also work on stability, agility, cardio and everything in between.  The upbeat atmosphere keeps you constantly motivated.  And, for the record, my pink gloves are now misleading; I pack quite a punch.

Club Pilates

Snobery must be the theme of the day; I am also a Pilates snob.  I have been a classical Pilates instructor for nearly eight years now.  Over that time, I have taken some incredible, some unremarkable and some downright awful classes.  Club Pilates, I am happy to say, belongs in the first category.  What I love about this place is that is offers intense workouts, which are classically based.  This combo, believe it or not, is pretty tough to come by.  I also love that the classes are reasonably priced, set to fun music and no two classes are the same.  Every instructor I’ve taken from has been great.  So much so that when I’m on holiday, I’ve recommended this place to my own Pilates clients!
