In keeping with yesterday’s theme, here’s another Chinese New Year inspired post. People are always asking me where to get the best Chinese food in LA. I suppose that my being 3/8 Chinese makes me some sort of authority on the matter. Or perhaps it is my semi-close proximity to Chinatown. Well, for the longest time, I didn’t have a good answer to the question. Until a couple of years ago. Believe it or not, the best Chinese food is not in Chinatown. For the really good stuff, you’ve got to head east. I am a huge fan of dumplings. Though there are a bevy of great dumpling options in the neighborhoods east of Los Angeles, there is no better place than Din Tai Fung. And if you’re going to do it, do it right and go to the original- Din Tai Fung #1 in Arcadia. Visiting Din Tai Fung is an experience all on its own. You’re almost guaranteed to wait in line. But, don’t worry. You can peruse the neighboring Asian shops and they will text you when your table is ready. The servers are all outfitted with headsets. Service is fast, friendly and efficient; this place is popular and they want to turn as many tables as possible. As far as ordering goes, everything I’ve ever had there is excellent. But, my favorites include the Juicy Pork Dumplings (aka Soup Dumplings), Sautéed String Beans or Bok Choy and Shanghai Rice Cakes. Though I am partial to the Arcadia branch, the good news it that Din Tai Fung is a global chain. So check out their website. There may be one near you! Gung Hay Fat Choy and happy eating!
P.S. Here’s a fun tutorial to make sure you’re eating your Soup Dumplings correctly!
