Starting The LA Survival Guide is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It has been incredibly rewarding to see my website come to life. It is a process I truly enjoy; every time I scroll through my page, there’s a sense of pride knowing that (with the help of photographer extraordinaire, Michele LoBosco) I built it from scratch. That being said, not everything comes easily. Creating a blog is not just taking pretty pictures and writing clever quips. It’s about taking pretty pictures and writing clever quips on a schedule, no matter how unpretty and unclever I am feeling. Some days the creativity is just pouring out of me. I’m feeling effortlessly inspired, artistic and witty; I can write and edit photos for hours. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. More often than I’d care to admit, it is like pulling teeth to get anything down on paper. I will stare at the blank screen with an equally blank mind. And when I do finally manage to jot something down, it is not always good. Or, at least, it’s not something I’m particularly proud of. Which isn’t the best feeling. ‘Check out my latest piece of mediocrity. Enjoy!’ It’s challenging to be creative on a schedule. Which is why I’ve taken to grasping at inspiration no matter when or where it strikes. I am always jotting down little notes and thoughts. And, come my next brain freeze, I’ll be able to call upon that quirky anecdote that I thought up in the shower. I haven’t yet figured out how to schedule my inspiration. So, until I do, I’m stockpiling it for those times when I’m coming up short. It may not be the most romantic approach to writing. But, it’s what’s worked for me so far. And sure, if you don’t try, you’re guaranteed not to put out anything embarrassing. But, you’re equally guaranteed not to create anything inspired, either. For every crappy piece I’ve written, there is another one that I am over-the-top proud of. And those are the ones that inspire me to keep plugging away.
