I love Mindy Kaling. Though I am one of only two and a half people I know who watched her show (the other one and a half being my best friend and a talent agent who reps an actress on the show and just half watched it), her 1.7 million Instagram followers would attest to the fact that I’m not her only fan. Which is why I am ashamed to admit that I am only just now reading her book. Unsurprisingly, it is hilarious and brilliant. But surprisingly, I am finding a wealth of inspiration in this witty woman’s words. Now I know that plenty of people say that, given the chance, they would totally be best friends with such-and-such celebrity. But, when it comes to me and Mindy, it’s completely different. We actually would be best friends. Mostly because I think she’s amazing. And who doesn’t want to be friends with someone who thinks you’re amazing? Seriously. Exhibit A- I just read that in her upcoming book, Why Not Me?, she has a chapter entitled Soup Snakes. I overuse the term “soup snakes,” a misinterpretation of “soul mates.” All. The. Time. Granted, I stole it from her show, The Office, but still. Best friends. Yet I digress. Why is Mindy Kaling an appropriate blog topic? Why am I writing about this younger, tanner Tina Fey? Because I find her inspiring. And sometimes, when I sit down at the computer, I find myself at a standstill. Call it writer’s block or what have you; more often than I’d care to admit, I feel uninspired and don’t know what to write. So as I sat reading her book today, I couldn’t help but feel overcome with exhilaration. Here is a woman with a background not dissimilar to my own who, through her unique voice, a little bit of luck and a
little whole lot of hard work, manifested her dream career. If that isn’t encouraging, I don’t know what is. And so I pose the question to myself (and anyone else who is feeling less than motivated to create), “What Would Mindy Do?” I feel like she would go for it. She would take a crazy idea and run with it. And she would find the funny in the most mundane, be it an office or outfit. Isn’t that the true sign of a writer? To be able to write about nothing and everything just the same. And to write about it with style and humor? Well, that’s exactly what Mindy would do.
P.S. Why these fringy photos at the river? Because I love pretty pictures and I feel like Mindy would enjoy their playful sassiness and totally approve.
