The other day, I was getting dressed for court. (Long, actually pretty interesting story. But, like most juicy things, I’m not at liberty to discuss.) Like I’ve said before, I’m still pretty new at this corporate America gig. So, I put on my interpretation of a professional outfit- a white blouse and black skirt. And I looked like a cater waiter. No offense to servers, but it was definitely not the look I was going for. I realized that, try as I might, I can’t do the suit and tie thing, so to speak. (Unless I’m pulling an Annie Hall, of course. Pulling an Annie Hall is always encouraged.) It just isn’t me. I can walk the walk, I can talk the talk, but I just can’t dress the dress. So, I did something that is me. I pulled a hair scarf out of my drawer and tied it in a bow around my neck. And I made that uniform my own. Because, while I try to navigate a new world that isn’t very me, it’s important to let little pieces of myself shine through. So I don’t get lost in the crowd.
