I did something very grown-up yesterday. And I’m actually very excited about it. I joined Rotary. For those of you who are unfamiliar, Rotary is a service organization with clubs in literally every big city and tiny town in the world. It also may be the most adulting (as well as the nerdiest) thing about me. And I love it. Honestly, it started out as an excuse to get away from the office once a week to have lunch with my dad. (He’s a longtime member.) I figured, free lunch, time with my pops and I’ll get to zone out for a few hours. But, I was surprised to find that I really enjoyed myself. The members are kind, the programs are interesting and it was inspiring to meet successful people who are taking time out of their busy schedules to enrich the lives of others. So after a few months of being a regular guest, I decided to take the plunge and become a full-fledged member. But, here’s the thing. I don’t exactly fit in. (Story of my life.) First of all, I am one of the youngest members. Secondly, our club is about 80% men. Not to mention, I am not exactly a suit-wearing professional. None the less, they accepted my application and yesterday was my big debut. Every new member must give a self-introduction speech in front of the group, which usually ranges in size from 200 to 300 people. In preparing for the speech, I debated…do I do what everyone else does; wear a suit and give a standard intro talk? Or do I be myself? I chose the latter. Instead of the suit, I wore the outfit you see today. And instead of listing my accolades (partially because mine pale in comparison to the rest of the group’s), I wrote a Top 10 list like I do for my blog. The Top 10 Things You Don’t Know About Me. And it went amazingly well. Everyone laughed at my jokes and smiled at my snark. Well, I don’t know if it was my writing or the fact that I am the youngest female in a predominately male club. But whatever. I’ll take what I can get. And I love the fact that now I’m a part of an organization where I can meet interesting people and do some good, all while being my quirky little self.
